Reports To: Executive Leadership
Job Type: Full-Time
A2 Labs, LLC is seeking a highly capable Director of Accounting to lead and evolve our accounting function within a government contracting (GovCon) environment that is increasingly supporting early-stage commercial product development and commercialization. This role is ideal for an experienced accounting leader who is strategic yet hands-on, brings strong judgment and critical thinking, and thrives in a fast-moving, growing organization.
The Director of Accounting will oversee day-to-day accounting operations while also playing a central role in financial forecasting, planning, and forward-looking analysis across both government-funded programs and emerging commercial activities. This position is not a CFO role, but it is a senior leadership role that requires ownership, initiative, and the ability to translate financial data into meaningful insights that support executive decision-making — particularly as products transition from R&D into early revenue-generating offerings.
The ideal candidate has deep experience with Deltek Costpoint, strong GovCon knowledge, and the ability to operate effectively where financial structures, commercial models, and processes are still evolving.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting Leadership & Operations
• Lead and oversee the company’s accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, project accounting, payroll coordination, and month-end and year-end close
• Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant financial reporting in accordance with U.S. GAAP and FAR/DFARS requirements
• Maintain ownership of balance sheet integrity, including reconciliations, accruals, intercompany accounts, and indirect rate structures
• Establish, document, and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls as the organization scales
• Provide mentorship and oversight to accounting staff and external accounting support as applicable
Forecasting, Planning & Analysis (Critical Focus Area)
• Develop and maintain rolling financial forecasts, cash flow projections, and scenario models reflecting both government program activity and evolving commercial revenue streams
• Partner with executive leadership to translate program execution plans, hiring projections, and business development pipelines into actionable financial forecasts
• Perform variance analysis against forecasts and budgets, identify trends, and proactively surface risks and opportunities
• Apply strong critical thinking and judgment in ambiguous or fast-changing situations, recommending solutions rather than simply reporting issues
Commercial & Product-Focused Financial Support
• Support financial modeling and forecasting for early-stage commercial products, including pricing assumptions, unit economics, cost structures, and scalability considerations
• Partner with leadership to evaluate financial implications of commercialization decisions, such as pilots, phased launches, and hybrid government/commercial revenue models
• Help define appropriate accounting treatment, financial tracking, and reporting as products move from R&D into early commercialization
• Bring structure and clarity to commercial financial processes that are still forming, balancing practicality, compliance, and long-term scalability
GovCon & Compliance
• Oversee government contracting accounting compliance, including indirect rate management, allowable and unallowable cost tracking, and timekeeping compliance
• Support audits, reviews, and government inquiries, ensuring audit-ready documentation and clear financial narratives
• Assist with incurred cost submissions, provisional billing rates, and project-level financial reporting as needed
Cross-Functional Leadership
• Serve as a financial partner to contracts, operations, HR, engineering, and business development teams
• Communicate complex financial concepts clearly and effectively to non-financial stakeholders
• Support leadership with thoughtful, data-driven insights that inform operational and strategic decisions
Required Qualifications:
• U.S. Citizenship required; with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance (Secret or higher).
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• Approximately 8–12 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility
• Significant experience in government contracting (GovCon) accounting
• Strong, hands-on experience with Deltek Costpoint (required)
• Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP, FAR/DFARS, indirect rates, and project-based accounting
• Demonstrated experience with financial forecasting, cash flow planning, and analytical modeling
• Experience supporting or analyzing commercial business models, including early product revenue, pilots, pricing analysis, or mixed government/commercial environments
• Proven ability to think critically, exercise sound judgment, and operate effectively in a dynamic, evolving environment
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (financial models, pivot tables, complex formulas)
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
• CPA or CPA candidate
• Experience scaling or modernizing accounting functions in a small-to-mid-sized GovCon or technology organization
• Exposure to organizations transitioning technology from government-funded development into commercial markets
Work Environment:
This is a hybrid role requiring in-office presence three days per week in Arlington, VA. The Director of Accounting is expected to be an engaged, visible leader who collaborates closely with both technical and non-technical teams.
